NEWS
Already it is May so if you are coming to see us at the Resource Centre, please do so before our last day of business, Friday June 11th, before our summer closing. For your summer reading pleasure, we invite you to take out several books from our library. We have something for everyone on a wide variety of topics – theology, fiction, spirituality, social issues . . . and many more, including lots of wonderful books for children. The Board and Staff of the
Resource Centre join in in wishing you a summer blessed with relaxation and re-creation, moments with those you love, and time to reflect on how we live faithfully in community.
Shalom!
Borrowing from the Resource Centre Library:
We have a well stocked Library for your personal or group use with books and videos on a wide range of topics – worship, spirituality, family, children, parenting, Bible and religious study, prayer and personal meditation . . . and many more. Come in and take advantage of this service at no cost to you.
We also encourage congregations to take out a Mini Library Lending Box – a box full of books – to be loaned to members over a period of a couple of months. This way our Library moves out to folks who don’t travel to Kingston frequently.
Purchasing from the Resource Centre:
When purchases are made through the Resource Centre, you pay no shipping costs and the Resource Centre receives a commission on the sale - we all benefit. We can provide you with a variety of resources, published by different publishers, which we purchase through the United Church Resource Distribution (UCRD). You may make your choices from -
1. The United Church’s own UCRD Catalogue or resources listed on the UCC Web Site. Included are books published by The United Church of Canada and UCC supplies such as certificates, etc.
2. Resources from UCRD’s catalogue called “By Popular Demand” – books published by other publishers but kept in stock by UCRD
3. Resources from almost any other publishers which could be ordered in for you.
Let us know of the resources you wish to have and we can usually get them for you!
Book Displays from the Resource Centre for Special Events:
A selection of resources for sale are available for browzing and shopping at most Presbytery Meetings and for other events, such as Congregational Coffee Times, workshops, UCW gatherings, etc. when requested.
Gift Certificates from the Resource Centre, in any amount, are available as thank you’s or gifts for those you want to honour and celebrate.

FEATURED BOOKS
Summer brings gardening to mind . . . and fresh seasonal foods.
Check out Simply in Season, a cookbook with a difference, commissioned by the Mennonite Central Committee “to promote the understanding of how the food choices we make affect our lives and the lives of those who produce the food”. As well as seasonal recipes, this book offers a great Fruit and Vegetable Guide with tips on selection, storage, preparation, serving and nutrient value. Each season also offers “Invitations to Action” such as – try one new food per week – “Vote” with your dollars by spending your food budget on foods that reflect your values - buy fairly traded products – invite a newcomer to lunch . . and many more. This cookbook costs $20.99 plus tax.
To accompany this unique cookbook is a Leader’s Study Guide which will help you to connect food and faith while exploring the value of eating local, seasonal food. This is good for a small group of adults or children. The guide provides 6 core sessions on the themes – Food Stories, Creation, Health, Time, Money, and Celebration, as well as supplemental, optional sessions on – Animals, Farm Workers, Bible and Food, Globalization, Fair Trade, Local Farmers and Advocacy. This study would provide an excellent opportunity to tie together such basics in our lives as our faith and our health/enjoyment/support of local agro-economy. The Guide costs $10.99 plus tax.
