Black History Month February is Black History Month and with the United Church's focus on being an intercultural church, we are encouraged to spend some time in February reflecting on what is means to be intercultural in relation to our black sisters and brothers. The DVD Sankofa: Histories and Heritages of Black Peoples in the UCC is a good place to start. It offers 7 sessions, with a study guide, which will help us make connections between faith, identity and culture; facilitate a deeper understanding of the United Church’s commitment to becoming an intercultural, anti-racist church; and inspire faith-filled work toward active change on a personal, congregational and societal level. Take up the challenge in your congregation to continue the great social justice heritage of the United Church by exploring Black History in February. Call us to learn more about other resources available. Lent Overlapping with Black History Month is the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday on Wednesday on February 22nd. You might choose to make Black History your Lenten study this year or we have other resources to offer. To start with, a traditional Lenten resource is our annual United Church Lenten Study Book, I Am Listening: Daily Devotions for Lent edited by Betty Lynn Schwab. “Voices from a surprising range of ages and backgrounds (Canadian Forces chaplains, youth, ministers, UCW members) are united in a common theme in I Am Listening. Although the contributors’ reflections are based on scripture passages that span the Bible and life experiences that span the globe, each devotion calls readers to listen with their hearts and to hear the voice of God in their listening. Each daily reading includes a scripture text, reflection, hymn suggestion, prayer, and a thought to ponder. This is ideal for individuals, congregations and study groups with a weekly reflection process for all readers and a study guide for small groups included. Price is $12.95 plus tax. For more in depth reading on your own or a book to share in a group, check out The Last Week What the Gospels Really Teach about Jesus' Final Days in Jerusalem by Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. These two scholars, who write in a style accessible to lay people, explore the last seven days of Jesus' life and rediscover a new way of understanding the events of Holy Week. They turn the traditional understanding of Holy Week on its head to reveal its true significance in history and for faith. Bring fresh perspective and insights to your spiritual journey with this book. Price is $17.99 plus tax. Reaching Out!
